Mathematics at BSM

Maths At BSM

At Blandford St Mary Primary School there is a daily mathematics lesson in each class lasting up to one hour depending on the age group.

The lesson addresses the requirements of the National Curriculum for Mathematics. The key features of a lesson include:
· Interactive whole class/group teaching – using AfL techniques set out in the Teaching & Learning policy
· The use of mental methods leading to effective use of written methods
· Development of the children’s mathematical vocabulary
· An effective pace
· Manageable and effective differentiation

On the tabs above are links to: skills pyramids outlining objectives and methods relating to different year groups for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. As well as resources in many other areas.

Problem of the week

Two Pots Make Four

You are standing at a well with two pots. One holds seven litres and the other holds five litres. Neither pot has any markings so the only amount of water you can measure accurately is when a pot is full.

Big Pot Small Pot

How can you measure out exactly four litres?

Coins in Envelopes

Fifteen pennies are placed in four envelopes and the envelopes are sealed. It is possible to pay someone any amount from 1p to 15p by giving them one or more envelopes. How were the pennies distributed between the envelopes?

Ten lords a-leaping,
Nine ladies dancing,
Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree!
