Maths At BSM

At Blandford St Mary Primary School there is a daily mathematics lesson in each class lasting up to one hour depending on the age group.

The lesson addresses the requirements of the National Curriculum for Mathematics. The key features of a lesson include:
· Interactive whole class/group teaching – using AfL techniques set out in the Teaching & Learning policy
· The use of mental methods leading to effective use of written methods
· Development of the children’s mathematical vocabulary
· An effective pace
· Manageable and effective differentiation

On the tabs above are links to: skills pyramids outlining objectives and methods relating to different year groups for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. As well as resources in many other areas.

The first post.....

Well, here we are - the first blog post ever at BSM! This is just a quick note to give you, the reader, the opportunity to see exactly what we are developing in maths this year!

The dominating subject at the moment is the adoption of the new Primary Framework in Maths: http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/primaryframeworks/.

Our aim at the moment is to become familiar with the Frameworks and how they work and then begin to put them into practice by using them to plan at least one unit of work this term. Following this, we will endeavour to decide which style of short-term planning suits our school the best as well as determining any other 'best pratice' techniques.

I have found several pieces of guidance and resources on the Net which may be of use or interest:
http://tlfe.org.uk/mathematics/primaryframework/ - an excellent site with some planning exemplars that are very useful.

Also - look to the right for a list of ICT resources for Maths - flipcharts and ITPs alike!
